This Will Be My Undoing by Morgan Jerkins

The essay I liked the most was The Hunger for Men’s Eyes. Writing about sexuality, rape culture, relationships and perception of the black female while also recounting a coming of age story is not an easy fete. Her artistic persona feels very close to me. While incredibly well-written and well-researched, I feel like I know this woman. it’s a short read, but I had to put it down several times and stare out into my apartment just thinking about her story and all of our stories. The word I’m probably searching for is: raw. There were others that were so difficult to read I almost cried. Jerkin’s writes with such profilc historical evidence and emotional intellectual depth that I felt like I was truly reading a diary of a close loved one. Jerkins’ manages to give her take on this ideal with emotionally charged and well researched essays. That intersection of being a black female and a feminist is a very interesting place to be. Growing as a black woman in predominantly white spaces, I’ve experienced subtle, overt, and painful racist and sexist behaviors that have taken years for me to even evaluate as such. There are few collections I have read that I’ve felt as personally and socially important as Morgan Jerkins debut This will be my Undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female and Feminist in (White) America.
